One person was killed, and at least twelve others were wounded following a mass shooting in western North Carolina. The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Sunday in Hickory, a city in Catawba County, the Associated Press reported.
One victim remains in critical condition, while several others are hospitalised and receiving treatment. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Hickory Police Department are investigating the scene.
“The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and … Hickory Police Department responded to a report of multiple persons shot at a residence on Walnut Acres Drive, located in the Mountain View community of southwest Catawba County," the sheriff’s office stated in a news release.
“Twelve victims have been reported. One … is deceased. Another of these reported victims is in critical condition. Several others remain hospitalised," the official statement added.
An investigation is underway, and no arrests have been made.
In a separate incident, a nineteen-year-old was taken into custody in Illinois for allegedly injuring eleven people in a shooting after a party boat cruise in South Carolina.
The shooting occurred Sunday night on a dock in Little River following an altercation on the boat during the three-hour cruise, Horry County Police said.
The suspect is expected to be charged with several counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Officials will then seek to extradite him from Lake County, Illinois, back to South Carolina, police said.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and further charges may be filed.
