Only being content will help cure the disease of greed, says Santosh Hegde

“Greed is a disease and the only cure for it is contentment,” the former Lokayukta Santosh Hegde said in Hubballi on Tuesday.

He was delivering a lecture at a Vigilance Awareness Week programme at the South Western Railway headquarters there. He delivered the keynote address on Ethics and Contentment at the event held at the Rail Soudha.

Mr. Hegde spoke about the importance of ethics and honesty in public and personal life. He observed that in today’s society, the attitude towards corrupt people has changed and society often tends to respect power and money rather than values and integrity which is not a healthy sign.

He emphasized that “greed is a disease and the only cure for it is contentment.”

Mr. Hegde urged everyone to practice being content in life saying that real happiness and peace come not from accumulation of wealth or power but from satisfaction and moral strength.

General Manager, South Western Railway, Mukul Saran Mathur said that being part of a service-oriented organization, a railway employee’s actions has a direct impact on the public.

He emphasized that change must begin with oneself and that efforts should be made to bridge the trust deficit in the workplace. He highlighted the importance of having strong processes in the organization so that service is delivered efficiently and effectively.

During the programme, special vigilance magazine, Sankalp, was released. It contains thoughts and discussions on integrity, transparency and real case studies symbolizing the organization’s commitment to integrity, transparency and accountability.

The sensitization session was attended by Additional General Manager P. Ananth, SDGM and CVO A. Annadurai, Principal Head of Departments and senior officers, employees and others, said a release from Chief Public Relations Officer Manjunath Kanamadi.
