Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was a rare kind of leader, a person who was willing to do anything, even eliminate bureaucratic red tape, to ensure public welfare, said V.K. Sreekandan, MP. He was delivering the keynote address at a memorial event marking the second death anniversary of the Congress leader at the District Congress Committee (DCC) headquarters here on Friday.

Describing Chandy’s tenure as a historic milestone in the State’s development, Mr. Sreekandan highlighted the transformative impact he had on the State’s health and education sectors. “No one in the future will be able to embody the kind of humane, people-centric leadership that Chandy stood for,” he said. “He had an unparalleled ability to connect deeply with the masses, a trait that remains unmatched.”

He added that Chandy was instrumental in bringing people closer to the Congress party. “If our workers maintain close bonds with the public like he did, the Congress party can rise again with strength,” he asserted.

The memorial observance began with former Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan lighting a lamp before a portrait of Chandy. DCC president Joseph Tajet presided over the meeting, which featured a memorial address by senior journalist George Pulikkan.
