The Haryana government on Tuesday, October 14, appointed Om Prakash (O P) Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer, as the new DGP. This came hours after Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Singh Kapur was sent on leave following controversy over the suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. The appointment order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Mishra Singh, assigns Singh the additional charge of DGP during Kapur’s leave period.

“The Governor of Haryana is pleased to assign the additional charge of DGP, Haryana, to Sh. Om Prakash Singh, Managing Director, Haryana Police Housing Corporation, Panchkula, Director, Forensic Science Laboratory, Madhuban and Director General (Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau), during the leave period of Sh. Shatrujeet Singh Kapur," the official order stated. Singh, who is due to retire on December 31, will serve in the position temporarily.

Who is OP Singh?

With more than 32 years of service, O P Singh is regarded as one of Haryana’s most experienced police officers. He has served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in five districts, Commissioner of Police in Ambala-Panchkula and Faridabad, and Inspector General (IG) of both Rewari and Hisar ranges.

Reportedly, Singh is the brother-in-law of the late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He is married to Sushant’s elder sister, Ritu Singh.

At the Union Finance Ministry, Singh played a pivotal role between 2004 and 2007 in framing the Rules of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and was instrumental in registering the first-ever case under the anti-money laundering law.

Between 2008 and 2012, Singh headed Haryana’s Department of Sports, where he developed the PIE (Participation, Inclusion and Excellence) model to promote sporting talent. He also launched the SPAT Sports Scholarship Programme under the ‘Play for India’ initiative, which engaged over a million young athletes across the state.

Singh has received several honours, including the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2008) and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2017).

An alumnus of St. Xavier’s College and Delhi University, Singh holds a Master’s in Political Science, an MBA in Disaster Management, and an M.Phil. from Madras University.
