The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 42.34 kg of hydroponic weed valued at nearly Rs 42 crore from two passengers who arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai from Bangkok, said officials.
According to officials, the intelligence-based operation was carried out by the Mumbai Zonal Unit of the DRI, which intercepted the duo shortly after they landed.
A detailed examination of their baggage led to the discovery of 21 food packets, including those labelled as noodles and biscuits, used to conceal the narcotic substance.
Tests using the NDPS field detection kit confirmed the presence of hydroponic weed.
The seized contraband was taken into custody under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and both passengers were arrested.
This is the second major seizure by DRI Mumbai in three days, following the recovery of 4.7 kg of cocaine worth ₹47 crore on Friday. In that case, five individuals, including carriers, financers, handlers, and distributors, were apprehended.
Together, the two operations have resulted in the confiscation of over Rs 90 crore worth of narcotics, dealing a significant blow to organised drug trafficking networks operating through India’s western air corridors.
Officials said the DRI remains alert to new smuggling methods, including the use of food packets and consumable goods to hide contraband.
Under its ongoing Operation Weed Out, the agency has so far seized 292.9 kg of hydroponic weed from various airports across the country.
“The DRI stands committed to building a Nasha Mukt Bharat by relentlessly intercepting narcotics, dismantling trafficking syndicates, and protecting the health and security of citizens," a government spokesperson said.
