Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, clarifies on erotic content on ChatGPT

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has now acknowledged that his recent post teasing the upcoming changes to ChatGPT ‘blew up’ online, sparking widespread debate over the platform’s evolving content policies and personality design.

In a now viral post shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Altman hinted that ChatGPT would soon become “more like what people liked about GPT-4o,” with fewer restrictions and a more expressive, human-like tone. “My post about upcoming changes to ChatGPT blew up on X,” Altman wrote. “We’re excited to show you what’s coming.”

A shift toward more expressive AI

The announcement made by OpenAI CEO follows the growing user decade for a livelier, less filtered ChatGPT experience.

Altman confirmed that OpenAI plans to roll out updates that relax previous limitations, majorly around sensitive topics such as mental health and adult content. The company says it now has better safety tools and moderation systems in place to support this shift. “We are not the elected moral police,” Altman said in response to criticism, defending OpenAI’s decision to allow more flexibility in how ChatGPT interacts with users.

Controversy over erotica and mental health filters

The backlash on the post shared by Altman intensified after he made reference to erotica, prompting concerns about how far the platform might go in lifting restrictions. The critics also questioned whether OpenAI was compromising safety for engagement. On the other hand, some also praised the company for this move. However, Altman later clarified that OpenAI had previously imposed strict filters to mitigate mental health risks, but now believes those restrictions made the platform less enjoyable.

With improved safeguards, the company is ready to reintroduce more nuanced and emotionally intelligent responses. In anther post shared on X, Altman wrote, “

Ok this tweet about upcoming changes to ChatGPT blew up on the erotica point much more than I thought it was going to! It was meant to be just one example of us allowing more user freedom for adults. Here is an effort to better communicate it:

As we have said earlier, we are making a decision to prioritize safety over privacy and freedom for teenagers. And we are not loosening any policies related to mental health. This is a new and powerful technology, and we believe minors need significant protection.

We also care very much about the principle of treating adult users like adults. As AI becomes more important in people's lives, allowing a lot of freedom for people to use AI in the ways that they want is an important part of our mission.

It doesn't apply across the board of course: for example, we will still not allow things that cause harm to others, and we will treat users who are having mental health crises very different from users who are not. Without being paternalistic we will attempt to help users achieve their long-term goals.

But we are not the elected moral police of the world. In the same way that society differentiates other appropriate boundaries (R-rated movies, for example) we want to do a similar thing here.”

Mark Cuban warns Sam Altman on bringing erotica to ChatGPT

Billionaire entrepreneur and Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban has now criticised OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the company’s decision to relax safety restrictions in ChatGPT which also includes the permission to generate adult-oriented content verified users. Cuban has now warned that this move by the company could alienate families and also damage the trust in the platform. “This is going to backfire,” Cuban posted on X.

“No parent is going to want their kids using ChatGPT if they think erotica is part of the experience.”
