Bhadradri Kothagudem district, which shares a border with the Maoist hotbed of Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar region, witnessed a string of surrenders by a total of 314 Maoists so far this year.
This includes the surrender of as many as eight members of the banned CPI (Maoist) from the neighbouring State before Superintendent of Police B. Rohit Raju in Telangana’s coal town of Kothagudem on Tuesday (August 26).
According to police, the surrendered Maoists, including an Area Committee Member, a party member and six Militia Members, hail from Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh.
They shunned the violent path and returned to the mainstream with an intent to lead a peaceful life following the efforts of the district police under the ‘Operation Cheyutha’ initiative, police said.
Police added that each of the eight surrendered Maoist members were given ₹25,000 in cash as immediate assistance. Additional financial support will be provided to them soon.
