The Baltimore Orioles restocked certain portions of their roster this offseason, bringing in some veteran help and strengthening the core of a playoff-ready team. But their 2026 ceiling may not be based on the newcomers.
It may depend upon one familiar name: Adley Rutschman. Once considered the cornerstone of the franchise and an inevitable MVP candidate in the making, Rutschman now enters 2026 in the midst of the most important stretch of this young career.
Rutschman's stalling rise raises questions
The former number one overall pick looked every bit the transformational catcher throughout his first two seasons. He stabilized the pitching staff, controlled the strike zone, and offered switch-hitting power.
But for the past year and a half, there has been a leveling of that trajectory. Since the beginning of 2024, Rutschman has hit a 78 wRC+ in 161 games. His campaign in 2025 deflated to a career low 91 wRC+ in a much-contested season that was ravaged by several oblique strains.
The injuries impacted his swing consistency as well as durability, which limited the offensive spark that Baltimore was supposed to get from its backstop.
For a team that made its identity out of homegrown stars, the downturn matters. The Orioles can supplement on the edges, but around the edges, their foundation is built on Rutschman anchoring the lineup and leading the pitching staff. Moreover, his health is at the centre of the equation. A complete and continuous season might reinstate his timing and power. Projection systems are still seeing a rebound coming, pegging him for about 4.0 of those for 2026, 19 home runs, and a 116 wRC+, numbers that would definitely re-establish him among baseball's best catchers.
Internal improvement the key to Baltimore's season
The Orioles aren't down on the alternatives. Samuel Basallo has become one of the most interesting young talents of the organization. His bat does attract attention, but evaluators still consider him to be a developing defenseman. However, Baltimore would not like to rush that timeline. If Rutschman returns to form, the Orioles become stable. They can ease Basallo into being a complementary role and maintain their leadership structure.
Rutschman's value goes beyond the statistics; he deals with the pitchers, calls the game, and sets the tone in the clubhouse. If he has trouble again, though, hard conversations ensue, leading the franchise to rethink the way it structures the future behind the plate. For now, Baltimore's cause for optimism focuses on internal growth. Big signings help, but championships take stars to play like stars. In 2026, the hopes of the Orioles aren't just pinned on roster additions. They rest on whether or not Adley Rutschman will be able to reclaim the trajectory that once made him the face of the franchise.
