Vinod Khanna's decision to leave films for Osho's commune surprised many. Swami Shailendra Saraswati revealed Khanna's emotional struggles and Osho's belief that he harbored jealousy towards Amitabh Bachchan's success. Osho advised Khanna to enter politics, but he declined, later admitting Osho's insight into his emotional disconnect from his family was accurate.
Vinod Khanna, celebrated for his charm and talent, shocked fans when he left films in the 1970s to join Osho’s commune in Oregon. Years later, personal revelations about his emotions and rivalry with Amitabh Bachchan have surfaced, shedding light on the superstar’s private battles.
Living close to Vinod at Rajneeshpuram
Osho’s brother, Swami Shailendra Saraswati, recently revealed in an interview with Galatta India that he lived near Vinod Khanna’s residence at Rajneeshpuram and spent considerable time with him. He explained that outward success doesn’t always reflect inner happiness, noting that even accomplished individuals often struggle privately in ways only they can understand.
Jealousy over Amitabh Bachchan
He further recalled that Khanna often appeared emotional and would cry, initially attributing it to missing his wife and children.
However, Osho sensed a deeper reason: he believed Vinod was unconsciously struggling with jealousy over Amitabh Bachchan, who had reached new heights in both cinema and politics during Vinod’s absence.
Osho’s political advice to Vinod
Osho suggested that the actor enter politics and contest elections against Amitabh Bachchan. Vinod, however, was overwhelmed by the idea and insisted that his sadness stemmed only from missing his family. Osho, observing deeper emotions, believed Vinod’s grief was masking jealousy toward Bachchan’s success.
Shailendra Saraswati noted that after returning to India, Vinod Khanna did not reconnect with the family he had claimed to miss while in the US. Instead, he fell in love again and started a new family. Vinod later admitted that Osho had been correct about his lack of emotional connection with his wife and children.
