Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Classes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Backward Classes O.R. Kelu informed the Assembly on Tuesday that 1,059 SC and 80 ST students have benefited through the ‘Unnathi Scholarship Programme’ that provides scholarships for postgraduate studies abroad.
While none of the beneficiaries have pursued a second degree abroad after completing their initial courses, a significant number of students of pursued higher education in the United Kingdom (U.K.) have opted to stay back after completing their studies.
Among the 51 SC students who travelled to the UK in January 2024, 47 have applied for post-study work visas and are currently residing abroad. Of these, 24 have secured full-time employment, while four have returned to India after completing their programmes. The rest are engaged in part-time employment, Mr. Kelu said.
The Minister added that students who went abroad in the July 2024, September 2024 and January 2025 intakes are currently undergoing their courses. Besides, 36 ST students who enrolled during the 2024-24 and 2025-26 academic years are also currently pursuing their studies in various institutions abroad.
