The Perambalur district police have registered 82 cases pertaining to seizure of ganja and confiscated 16.44 kg ganja between July 1, 2024 and July 31, 2025. A total of 105 accused have been arrested in this connection.
The police had seized 1,779.8 kg of banned tobacco substances till date since July 1, 2024 and and arrested 314 persons in this connection. The number of cases registered were 305. Forty vehicles used for smuggling narcotic substances and liquor illegally were confiscated and auctioned.
The number of arrested persons detained under the Goondas Act in the district was 19 in 2024 and six so far this year. A police press release said ganja weighing 133.5 kg seized in 2024 was destroyed through drug disposal committee.
Clubs have been formed in all schools and colleges in the district to prevent substance abuse among students and create awareness. Over 450 awareness programmes were conducted in 2024 in schools, colleges, and public places highlighting the hazards of narcotic substances, the release added.
