Over 15,000 double bed room houses in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits were occupied by beneficiaries after notices were served giving them 10 days to take over. More 23,255 are yet to be occupied though they were allotted to people a long time ago. Second notice will be served, and if left unoccupied, they will be reallotted to the poorest of poor beneficiaries.
The first notice was served by Collectors, based on the advise of Telangana Housing Corporation.
Around 1 lakh 2BHKs were sanctioned in 109 locations of GHMC. Of them, 65,743 were completed and allotted before October 2023. Around 10,000 are reserved for people who would be evacuated during rejuvenation of Musi. Construction of 830 houses is yet to begin, 4,616 are yet to be allotted. And, 21,000 2BHKs are nearing completion and yet to be allotted. Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy earlier said that people would be given ₹5lakh for completion of the houses.
Before the first notice was served, 22,500 houses were occupied, said the corporation’s Superintending Engineer (Projects) Venkata Das Reddy. The notices were served informing them that if it is not occupied, it will be allotted to other deserving beneficiary.
People from economically poor backgrounds living in Hyderabad, who are waiting for a government house to be allotted, said they would be grateful if a 2BHK or Indiramma House in the city is allotted as they would have to lose their livelihood if the house is on the outskirts.
According to information provided by the government earlier, there are 166 slums in the GHMC limits - where approximately 42,432 people reside.
The corporation’s Vice Chairman V.P. Gautham said that scores of people are waiting for a house to be allotted anywhere near the city. It was found that seven lakh people from the four districts were found be eligible and do not have a site to construct house. The government is also trying to identify lands to building ground plus three floors in places where people live.
