At least 52 students were hospitalised after they complained of vomiting and stomach ache after consuming dinner at a state-run welfare hostel for boys in Telangana’s Jogulamba Gadwal district on Friday, according to officials.

The students from the hospital in Dharmavaram were admitted to a government hospital, where doctors confirmed on Saturday that they are clinically stable.

Around 110 students had dinner at the school hostel around 6:30 pm, after which some complained of stomach aches. The affected students said they were served sambar, rice, and cabbage curry for dinner on Friday night, after which they experienced stomach pain and vomiting.

“As per preliminary information, yesterday evening, around 6:30 pm, at BC Residential Boys School in Dharmavaram, Gadwal district, 110 boys consumed food and 52 suffered food poisoning. After vomiting, they were admitted to Gadwal Hospital. Today (Sunday), early in the morning, 32 boys were discharged, and the health condition of the remaining boys is also stable. We are investigating the matter," a police official from Jogulamba Gadwal told news agency ANI.

At least 32 students have been discharged, while the rest are under observation, according to a district health official. Doctors have confirmed that all are in stable condition and out of danger. “We are also running a camp in the hostel," the official told the Times of India.

Meanwhile, district health officials and food safety authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the cause of contamination. Food samples from the hostel kitchen have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis.

Additionally, officials from the local education department reached the school and reviewed the hygiene and cooking conditions at the hostel premises. The school management has been instructed to ensure strict food safety protocols going forward.

This came days after 15 students of Ravenshaw University were admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha on Wednesday due to suspected food poisoning, as per officials.

The students, who were vomiting, claimed that they fell ill after drinking water from a purifier at the East Hostel, while the authorities denied the allegation, stating that the samples had been sent for laboratory testing.
