The military conflict between Iran and Israel further intensified on Wednesday after the hostilities continued for the sixth consecutive day. Explosions were heard in Tehran today as intense Israeli airstrikes again targeted Iran’s capital, including Tehran’s District 18 area, near the Mehrabad airport, killing at least 585 people and leaving several others injured.
Meanwhile, Iran’s missile attacks hit several parts of Tel Aviv on the dawn of Wednesday, causing significant damage.
As per the media reports, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) even claimed to have launched a Fattah-1 hypersonic missile at Israel, the first use of this missile in the ongoing conflict.
The recent escalation of tensions between both the sides have pushed the Middle East on the brink of an all-out war.
Here’s The Top Points Of The Ongoing Conflict
- Intense Israeli airstrikes have killed 585 people and wounded 1,326 others across Iran since last Friday, news agency AP reported citing source from Iran’s Health Ministry on Wednesday. The Washington-based group Human Rights Activists said it had identified 239 of those killed in Israeli strikes as civilians and 126 as security personnel.
- Uncertainty roiled the region and residents of Tehran fled their homes in droves on the sixth day of Israel’s air campaign aimed at Iran’s military and nuclear programme. A major explosion was heard in Tehran Wednesday morning, following other explosions that boomed earlier in the predawn darkness.
- At least one strike appeared to target Tehran’s eastern neighborhood of Hakimiyeh, where the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has an academy.
- More than 50 Israeli fighter jets reportedly targeted Iranian military infrastructure, including a centrifuge production site in Tehran. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes were aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear weapons development and missile production networks.
- As the conflict intensified, Iran reportedly imposed a near-total internet blackout on Tuesday evening. NBC News reported that internet connectivity dropped sharply around 5:30 p.m. local time, affecting VPNs and disabling major mobile networks.
- Iran has retaliated against Israel’s airstrike campaign by launching some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel. So far, 24 people have been killed in Israel.
- At least 2,725 people in Israel have been evacuated from their homes since the conflict began, according to the country’s Government Press Office (GPO).
- Despite major successes in the aerial conflict with Iran, Israel is reportedly running low on defensive Arrow interceptors, raising concerns about the country’s ability to counter long-range ballistic missiles from Iran if the conflict isn’t resolved soon. A US official told The Wall Street Journal that Washington had been aware of the capacity problems for months and had been augmenting Israel’s defences with systems on the ground. Iranian forces have fired nearly 400 ballistic missiles, and Israel’s Arrow system has managed to neutralise most projectiles, though not without significant strain.
- Meanwhile, as per the US media, President Donald Trump is considering joining Israel’s ongoing strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The speculation of the US joining Israel in the conflict is fuelled by Trump’s abrupt departure from the G7 Summit and a string of ominous social media warnings.
- Earlier on Tuesday, Trump had issued veiled threats at Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and demanded the “unconditional surrender" of the Islamic Republic.
- In a Truth Social post, the US president warned Iran that it had total control over the skies of Tehran and also information on the whereabouts of Khamenei. “We are not going to take him out (kill!) — at least not for now". Trump warned, “Our patience is wearing thin", before demanding Iran’s “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" minutes later.
- Khamenei then responded, “The battle begins. Ali returns to Khaybar". Shortly after, he declared, “We must give a strong response to the terrorist Zionist regime. We will show the Zionists no mercy".
- Amid fears of further escalation, the United States has deployed additional fighter aircraft to the Middle East. Some air missions already underway have been extended. The US State Department announced that the US Embassy in Jerusalem will remain closed through Friday.
- US officials have also revealed that Trump had reportedly nixed a plan by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to assassinate Khamenei.
- Subsequently, Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran’s last monarch and an exiled opposition figure, called for regime change amid the escalating conflict. He claimed that Khamenei had “gone into hiding underground" and that the Islamic Republic was collapsing.
