 Gouri Tonnk

Gouri Tonnk talks about how the TV industry has changed over the years and how she manages time between her work and personal life.

Gouri Tonnk has been part of the TV industry for over two decades and over the years, she has closely witnessed how television has evolved — both technically and creatively. For her, the most significant shift is the way performances are pitched today.“The change may not be very big, but there are small, important changes,” she reflects. Technically, cameras and screens have become better. Audiences today are more intelligent. They don’t accept anything at face value. If something doesn’t seem convincing, they immediately reject it.”This sharper audience perspective, she adds, has reshaped storytelling. “When you’re writing, shooting or creating something, you can’t underestimate the viewer.

Everyone now prefers realism over exaggerated portrayals. Over-the-top expressions don’t work anymore — people respond to subtlety.”Gouri has been part of shows like Kahi Kisi Roz, Shakti: Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki and Kaamna. Despite long working hours for TV, she knows how to balance personal and professional life. “I believe balance is largely mental. My children know that I love them, and I make sure I’m completely aware of their routines — what they’re studying, where they’re going and what they’re preparing for.

I am totally involved in their lives, and they’re involved in mine,” she says.Having worked across genres, the actress who is currently seen playing a negative role in Itti Si Khushi says, “Something like Anupamaa excites me. I enjoy playing both shades, but now I want to attempt something inspirational and positive. As actors, we should not only entertain but also create characters that leave an impression, that encourage viewers to think, ‘if she can do it, I can do it too,” she admits.
