'Free Imran Khan' Movement In Lahore
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has informally launched its “Free Imran Khan Movement" from Lahore, weeks ahead of its planned nationwide protest campaign set to begin on August 5. The party is demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 and is facing multiple criminal charges.
According to the news agency Press Trust of India, PTI claimed that police have begun making arrests to prevent party supporters from joining the protests.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister and senior PTI leader Ali Amin Gandapur arrived in Lahore late Saturday night to formally kick off the campaign. Gandapur, along with other top PTI leaders, will be based at a farmhouse in Raiwind — near the Sharif family’s residence — where they will finalize protest plans and strategies.
Protests Across Pakistan
PTI intends to ramp up pressure on the Shehbaz Sharif-led government and the military establishment through a large-scale public mobilization starting early next month.
In the lead-up to the protests, police reportedly arrested at least 20 PTI workers at various locations across Lahore, where supporters had assembled to welcome party leaders. A PTI spokesperson stated that Punjab police have been conducting arrests and raiding homes in Lahore and other areas of Punjab province in recent days, aiming to deter workers from taking part in the upcoming protest movement.
