Pakistan’s security forces conducted late-night airstrikes on suspected militant hideouts in Balochistan’s Chiltan Mountain region near Quetta, killing at least 14 members of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), sources told CNN-News18.

The operation, described as a “precision aerial strike", targeted BLA militants reportedly sheltering in remote mountain camps. Sources said the group had been under surveillance for several days before being engaged by Pakistani aircraft in the early hours of Wednesday.

The strikes are said to have completely destroyed several makeshift hideouts used by the insurgent group, which has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on security convoys and infrastructure projects in the province.

The Balochistan Liberation Army, designated a terrorist organisation by Pakistan and several other countries, has waged an insurgency for decades, seeking greater autonomy and control over the resource-rich region.

The latest strikes signal an intensification of counterinsurgency efforts in Balochistan, where security forces have stepped up operations in recent months following a series of attacks on military posts and Chinese-backed development projects.

Last year was the deadliest in nearly a decade in Pakistan, according to the Centre for Research and Security Studies in Islamabad, with the vast majority of the attacks near the western border with Afghanistan.

In March, dozens of militants and off-duty security force members died when the Balochistan Liberation Army took control of a train with hundreds of passengers on board.

Security forces have been battling sectarian, ethnic and separatist violence for decades in impoverished but mineral-rich Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.
