AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday opposed the reported clearance and approvals granted for a project to construct multi-storeyed building within the Pallikaranai marshland, which has been recognised as a Ramsar site.

In a statement, Mr. Palaniswami underlined the significance of Pallikaranai marshland and called the steps taken by the erstwhile AIADMK regime under the National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change to protect the marshland. He also referred to the order of the National Green Tribunal against constructions near a Ramsar site.

Referring to reports that clearances have been granted for a project spread over 15 acre by Brigade Enterprises Limited to construct 1,250 housing units, Mr. Palaniswami cited experts’ opinion to doubt the stability of the proposed project constructed over the marshland.

“We cannot accept the DMK government playing with the lives of people. What is the suspense behind government departments, including Forest, Revenue and Environment, granting clearances to the project that would affect the environment?” Mr. Palaniswami questioned and further doubted if corruption played a part in it.

The former Chief Minister further contended: “The AIADMK will not remain a mute spectator to the government permitting a project whose construction will affect the marshland that is protecting Chennai from flooding. When the AIADMK comes to power, it will order for a detailed probe into the issue and legal action would be initiated against those responsible.”
