A 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at her matrimonial home in Delhi’s Nangloi after recording a video in which she accused her in-laws of harassing her, appealed to her parents to raise her young daughter and said she could no longer continue living with her husband, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as Tina, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her in-laws’ residence on Tuesday afternoon, India Today reported.

During the investigation, police recovered a video lasting over three minutes from her mobile phone, in which she detailed her alleged suffering and left emotional messages for her family.

In the recording, Tina repeatedly requested her parents to care for her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Mona, insisting that the child should not be entrusted to anyone else.

“Papa, I am going. Please take care of Mona. Don’t give Mona to anyone. She is your granddaughter. Please keep Mona with you," she is heard telling her father. Repeating the same to her mother, she asks her not to hand the child over “to anyone, not even to my husband".

She also appealed to other members of her family to raise her daughter as their own after her death. Tina apologised to her parents for the grief she believed she had caused them and urged her mother several times not to get into disputes with anyone following the incident.

In the video, Tina alleged that she had faced persistent mistreatment from her husband’s family and claimed they had never accepted her.

“The mistake was mine. I got married. Their family is not good. If they could not stand by their own son, how would they ever stand by me or my child?" she said.

Rejecting allegations levelled against her, Tina denied ever assaulting her in-laws or practising black magic.

“I never hit my mother-in-law. I never hit my brother-in-law. I never hit anyone. I was the one who was beaten," she said, adding, “I never performed any black magic or witchcraft. All I ever wanted was to have a happy, small family."

She further said she had lost hope of having a peaceful life and blamed her circumstances for pushing her to the edge. Referring to her husband, Tina described him as “mad" and said she could no longer live with him.

“I cannot live with this madman anymore," she says towards the end of the recording.

According to police, Tina had been married for nearly two-and-a-half years and was living with her husband, a private-sector employee, in Nangloi. The couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, India Today reported.

Because a married woman had died under suspicious circumstances, statements of the family members were recorded before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), in accordance with legal procedure.

Police said a case has been registered on the basis of the statements recorded before the SDM, and further investigation is underway. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Investigators are currently analysing the video, questioning family members and collecting additional evidence to verify the allegations made by the deceased and ascertain the circumstances that led to her death. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, police said.
