Parties to name LADC poll nominees today

Aizawl: The three main political parties in Mizoram, excluding Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are set to announce their candidates for the upcoming election to the 25-member Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) on Wednesday.

The council, headquartered in Lawngtlai district in southern Mizoram, will see polling on Dec 3, as the current five-year term concludes on Dec 18.The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) will reveal its nominees at 11am at the ZPM general headquarters office in Aizawl. Similarly, Mizo National Front (MNF) will announce its candidates at the party headquarters in Aizawl.Indian National Congress (INC) will disclose the first phase of its candidate list at the Lawngtlai district congress committee headquarters in Lawngtlai town.State BJP leaders have indicated that consultations are ongoing for candidate selection for the LADC election. Currently, the LADC is governed by United Democratic Alliance (UDA), led by BJP’s N Zangura, who assumed the role of chief executive member (CEM) on Aug 19. Zangura’s leadership is supported by MNF, the largest party, and the lone Congress member of the district council.Zangura initially became CEM in May with MNF support but was compelled to step down following a successful petition by former CEM V. Zirsanga in the Gauhati High Court. He was reinstated after winning a floor test.As of now, no candidates have filed nomination papers, with the deadline set by the State Election Commission (SEC) at 3pm on Friday.
