The passenger count in the Kochi Water Metro ferry services has crossed 50 lakh since its inception 29 months ago, according to official estimates.

The 50-lakh mark was clocked after Amal and Naina, a Malayali couple from Australia who were on a visit to Fort Kochi, collected tickets from the High Court terminal on Saturday (September 20). Loknath Behera, managing director of Kochi Metro Rail Limited, felicitated them on the occasion. He said that the unique travel experience provided by the Water Metro had helped in achieving the 50-lakh passenger turnout, according to a communication.

The Kochi Water Metro began operations on April 25, 2023. There are plans to introduce Water Metro services in 21 locations across the country. At present, nearly 20 boats operate services from terminals including High Court, Fort Kochi, Vypeen, Bolgatty, Mulavukad, South Chittoor, Cheranelloor, Eloor, Vyttila, and Kakkanad. The construction of terminals at five locations is in its final phase, it said.
