NEW DELHI: In a twist to the Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar suicide case, another policeman — ASI Sandeep Kumar of Rohtak cyber cell — died by suicide on Tuesday after levelling explosive allegations against the former Rohtak IG.In a 6.28-minute video, Sandeep alleged that when Puran Kumar was Rohtak IGP, “everything was openly for sale — pay money and get your posting.”He also claimed that call data records (CDRs) and CCTV footage from that period would “reveal the truth.”Sandeep left behind a three-page note and the video in which he said Kumar’s death “wasn’t a caste case” but that the officer was “very corrupt.”“Puran Kumar died by suicide to avoid family humiliation,” he wrote, calling it his “final note,” echoing the IPS officer’s own parting words from October 7.
TOI reached out to Puran Kumar’s brother-in-law for comment but received no response.Sandeep, who had helped arrest Kumar’s former PSO Sushil — accused of collecting bribes on the IPS officer’s behalf — was found dead in a tubewell room at his maternal uncle’s farm in Ladhot village near Rohtak. Police recovered his weapon, note, and video from the spot.In the video, he said he was “sacrificing himself to awaken people,” adding, “My grandfather fought for the country, and now his grandson will do the same.
I am proud that I stood for honesty. I lived honestly and belonged to a farming community. I am a follower of Bhagat Singh and his ideals. I am not afraid of anything.”Defending DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, Sandeep said, “The Haryana DGP is an honest person. These people and associations demanding action against him want freedom to be corrupt. Why are you destroying the country? The poison of casteism is spreading. Through politics, great truths are being concealed.”He also alleged that corruption during Puran Kumar’s tenure as Rohtak IGP was rampant and is now being covered up due to political influence because “his wife is an IAS officer and his brother-in-law is an MLA — both powerful people.”Sandeep praised former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia, who had been named along with Kapur in Puran Kumar’s suicide note, calling him “an honest officer who stood by the truth.”Rohtak SP Surender Singh Bhoria described Sandeep as “an honest and hardworking officer” and said forensic teams were examining the spot. With anger building in Sandeep’s Jat community and Dalit protests continuing over Puran Kumar’s death, the state faces a volatile situation. Police have stepped up vigil and are in touch with community leaders.Sandeep’s cousin Sanjay said the officer had appeared distressed for the past few days. Villagers from neighbouring areas gathered at Ladhot after his body was found.(With inputs from Sat Singh in Rohtak)
