Nobel Prize-winning economist and Director of the Development Innovation Lab (University of Chicago) Prof. Michael Kremer met State HRD Minister Nara Lokesh on Wednesday to discuss the findings of an evaluation study of the State’s Personalised Adaptive Learning (PAL) programme.
The study, conducted by a team from the University of Chicago, offers some of the strongest global evidence on the potential of EdTech in government schools. It found that students using PAL gained the equivalent of 1.9 additional years of learning in just 17 months than peers in non-PAL schools. Gains were seen across all grades and student groups, particularly for younger grades.
Launched in 2018 in 60 schools, PAL has since scaled to 1,224 schools across 26 districts, reaching over 3.25 lakh students. The programme is being implemented by the Department of Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh, with the Central Square Foundation (CSF) as its strategic partner. ConveGenius serves as the technology provider.
Prof. Kremer noted that the study finds evidence-backed technology, when combined with strong governance, as was observed in Andhra Pradesh, and can improve learning outcomes.
With rigorous evidence and large-scale implementation, Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a national leader in evidence-based EdTech reform, providing a blueprint for other States to follow.
