As part of the ‘one playground in one panchayat’ project of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, a playground will be constructed in Perumbalam grama panchayat in the Aroor Assembly constituency.
Daleema Jojo, MLA, said here on Wednesday that the playground, which will feature modern facilities, would be built at a cost of ₹1 crore. Of this, ₹50 lakh will be provided by the Sports department. The remaining amount will be mobilised through the MLA fund, local body funds, corporate social responsibility contributions, and public-private partnerships.
“At a time when use of narcotic substances and incidents of violence among youth and adolescents is on the rise, initiatives like these will help guide the younger generation towards sports. Various procedures related to the project will be expedited and the playground will be completed at the earliest,” Ms. Jojo said.
Perumbalam panchayat officials said the playground would be constructed in Ward 7. The facility will include a multipurpose sports ground, a walkway, an open gym, and restrooms, said Perumbalam panchayat president V.V. Asha.
The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs is implementing the project to establish quality sports grounds in all grama panchayats across Kerala. Of the 36 playgrounds sanctioned in the State for the 2025–26 fiscal, five have been allotted to Alappuzha district. Besides Perumbalam in the Aroor constituency, the remaining four grounds have been allotted in Thekkekkara, Palamel, Vallikunnam, and Thamarakkulam in the Mavelikara constituency.
