The death by suicide of a second year postgraduate medical (anaesthesia) student, identified as E. Srinivas, in Karimnagar in the wee hours of Tuesday owing to apparent financial distress sent shockwaves in the town.
The tragic incident prompted demands from his family members for stringent action against those who they alleged abetted the suicide.
The 43-year-old PG medical student of Prathima Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagunur, allegedly ended his life by administering himself with a fatal dose of intravenous injection at his residence in the small hours of Tuesday, sources said.
He reportedly joined the PG medical course under in-service quota for government doctors.
He had been under severe mental stress due to the mounting debt burden over the past few weeks.
In her police complaint, his wife Viplava Sri, a government doctor, alleged that her husband was driven to suicide by his five friends.
Mentioning their names in her complaint, she accused them of borrowing huge sums of money from her husband and also taking bank loans in his name, totalling around ₹3 crore.
She further alleged that they refused to return the money and threatened her husband causing mental agony to him.
The Karimnagar two-town police registered a case under Section 194 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are investigating.
A detailed investigation is underway into the case from all angles to determine the exact cause of his suicide, a senior police officer said.
