Administrative sanction has been accorded for the second phase of renovation work of the Pattom canal at a cost of ₹3.5 crore. The project has been sanctioned as part of a set of initiatives planned after the Navakerala Sadas held in 2023. The Minor Irrigation department will implement the project.
As part of the first phase of the project, works of ₹4.83 crore were carried out, due to which the low-lying areas near the canal were not flooded in recent rains, according to V.K. Prasanth, MLA. The Pattom canal with a width of 8 metres runs for a length of 9 km. It passes through Kudappanakkunnu, Chettivilakom, Kinavoor, Muttada, Kesavadasapuram, Pattom, Kunnukuzhy and Kannammoola wards and drains into the Amayizhanjan canal.
Works on the Killi
The works to be taken up include removal of the silt and mud to increase the canal’s depth, construction of protective walls, increase in height of existing protective walls, concrete lining of the canal and installation of fences to prevent dumping of waste into the canal. The Detailed Project Report for a similar work along the Killi river has been prepared and submitted. The ₹3.5-crore project will be taken up by the Major Irrigation department.
Mr.Prasanth said that the completion of the works on the Pattom canal and the Killi river will lead to a lasting solution to flooding in several wards in the Vattiyurkavu constituency.
