Pilibhit woman files complaint with women’s commission over police ‘inaction’ in attempted rape case

PILIBHIT: A woman from Pilibhit district filed a complaint with the state women’s commission on Monday, alleging police inaction after her 16-year-old daughter was the victim of an attempted rape.In her written complaint, the woman stated that on the night of July 9, a 20-year-old man from her village broke into their home and tried to sexually assault her daughter. He fled when the family woke up to her screams. An FIR was registered on July 11 under BNS sections 74 (criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 331(4) (house-trespass), and the Pocso Act. However, the accused was arrested only for “breach of peace” and later released. The woman alleged that the accused’s family has since threatened to kidnap her daughter. On August 13, she and her daughter appeared before commission member Pushpa Pandey during her visit to hear public grievances. That same night, members of the accused’s family allegedly broke into the house and tried to abduct her daughter. When police were called, officers instead detained her husband and brother-in-law, charged them for “breach of peace” before releasing them. The family has sought the commission’s intervention for a proper investigation and action against both the accused and the police.
