Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bhutan from November 11 to 12, 2025, at the invitation of the Bhutanese government, to take part in celebrations marking the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

In a statement ahead of his visit, the Prime Minister said it would be his “honour to join the people of Bhutan" on this special occasion. The visit will also witness the inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, a major milestone in India and Bhutan’s long-standing energy cooperation.

“The exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India during the Global Peace Prayer Festival in Bhutan reflects our two countries’ deep-rooted civilisational and spiritual ties," the Prime Minister said.

During the visit, Modi will meet His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, His Majesty the Fourth King, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. He expressed confidence that the trip will “further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity."

India and Bhutan share what Modi described as “exemplary ties of friendship and cooperation, rooted in deep mutual trust, understanding, and goodwill." He added that the partnership stands as a key pillar of India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and serves as a model for friendly relations between neighbouring countries.

The two nations have collaborated closely in areas such as hydropower, infrastructure, education, and culture, with India remaining Bhutan’s top trade partner and development ally. The Punatsangchhu-II project, built with Indian assistance, is expected to significantly boost Bhutan’s clean energy capacity and economic growth.
