Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Japan beginning on Friday (August 29, 2025) will reaffirm the two nations' commitment to peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Tuesday (August 26, 2025).

“Peace and stability will be discussed during upcoming visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Japan”, said Mr. Misri during a press conference.

“It will consolidate our friendship and open fresh avenues for cooperation,” he said.

On U.S. notification of 50% tariffs on India, Mr. Misri said “We are in touch “with the U.S.” on the penalty tariffs going into place on August 27” and indicated that “25% secondary sanctions were expected as they had been “announced on July 6.”

From Japan, Mr. Modi will travel to the Chinese city of Tianjin to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Ahead of Mr Modi’s visit to Tianjin , Ministry of External Affairs said that it hopes India’s concerns on terrorism and SCO founding principles against Terrorism, Separatism and Extremism will be reflected in SCO joint declaration, and added that document yet to be finalised.

Mr. Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings on sidelines of the SCO Summit, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Tanmaya Lal said.
