Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit China later this month to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval confirmed on Tuesday during his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Speaking at the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ Dialogue on the boundary issue, Doval underlined the “fresh energy and momentum" in India-China relations and noted the relative calm along the border.

“Our prime minister will be in China for the SCO summit, which makes today’s discussions particularly significant," he said.

This is the first official confirmation of PM Modi’s visit to Tianjin for the summit scheduled on August 31 and September 1.

Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on Monday for talks with Doval, a visit that is being seen as part of ongoing efforts to reset bilateral ties strained by the violent Galwan Valley clashes of 2020.

During the dialogue, both sides are expected to explore new confidence-building measures and assess the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

While troops have been withdrawn from several flashpoints, full de-escalation is still pending, with each country maintaining around 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers in eastern Ladakh.

The current round of talks follows Doval’s visit to China last December, when he met Wang Yi after Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping agreed in Kazan to revive stalled dialogue mechanisms.

Tensions between the two countries had sharply escalated in May 2020, culminating in deadly clashes in the Galwan Valley.

Relations began to ease only after a disengagement deal was reached in October last year at the final two friction points—Demchok and Depsang.

In recent months, New Delhi and Beijing have taken steps toward normalisation, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and India reopening tourist visas for Chinese nationals.
