Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Manipur on Saturday for his first visit to the north-eastern state that has been in the throes of ethnic violence since 2023. The prime minister’s trip is expected to be packed with public engagements, inaugurations, and outreach to families displaced by the violence.
PM Modi will first visit Mizoram, lay the foundation stone, and inaugurate multiple development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore at Aizawl around 10 am apart from addressing a public function. He will then visit Manipur to lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects at Churachandpur—one of the worst-hit areas—at around 12.30pm.
Check out the top 10 developments on the prime minister’s visit:
1. Mizoram Visit: The prime minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of several development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore at Aizawl in Mizoram. He will also flag off the Bairabi-Sairang New Rail line connecting Mizoram to the country’s rail network for the first time.
2. Outreach: In Manipur later, the prime minister will interact with internally displaced people and address two rallies during his visit to the state in Churachandpur and Imphal.
3. Development Agenda: The Prime Minister’s Office, in a press release, said PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore at Churachandpur and worth more than Rs 1,200 crore at Imphal. Among the projects, the PM will inaugurate the new Manipur Police headquarters built at a cost of Rs 101 crore at Mantripukhri in Imphal and a civil secretariat constructed at a cost of Rs 538 crore in the same locality. From Churachandpur, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for various projects, including the drainage and asset management improvement project worth Rs 3,647 crore and the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project at Rs 550 crore.
4. Security Tightened: Security forces have tightened arrangements across Manipur ahead of the prime minister’s visit. Combing operations are being carried out in sensitive areas to recover hidden arms and dismantle suspected hideouts, while security agencies are keeping a close watch on anti-social elements, with preventive detentions reported in vulnerable districts.
5. The Manipur government had earlier banned air guns in Churachandpur district in view of PM Modi’s visit.
6. Current Situation: Following the resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh, Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February.
7. Congress Reacts: Terming the visit a “farce", Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X: “So now it is official. The PM will spend less than 3 hours in Manipur tomorrow. This visit, instead of providing a force for peace and harmony, is actually going to be a farce."
8. Local Voices: Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra called the visit “merely symbolic" and “not aimed at bringing peace and ensuring justice". However, Manipur’s lone Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said the visit would be “very fortunate" for the people and the state.
9. Kuki-Zo Groups Welcome PM: Leading Kuki-Zo groups have welcomed the prime minister’s visit to Manipur, terming it a “historic and rare occasion".
10. All Members of the Legislative Assembly have been invited to attend the meetings.
