A 42-year-old PMK functionary was hacked to death by a gang at Banavaram village near Sholinghur town here in the early hours of Sunday.
The police said K. Balakrishnan, a local PMK functionary, worked at a private company in Sholinghur town. When he was returning home on his two-wheeler on Banavaram Main Road, a gang waylaid him and pushed him off the vehicle. Balakrishnan fell into a nearby pit. Before he could get out of the pit, the gang hacked him to death. Hearing the commotion, locals came to the spot and rushed Balakrishnan to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore, where doctors declared him brought dead. A case was registered by the Banavaram police. Special teams have been formed to nab the suspects.
Meanwhile, family members and relatives of the victim blocked Banavaram-Sholingur Main Road and demanded that the police arrest those responsible for the murder. After the police pacified them, the protesters dispersed. An investigation is under way.
