Thousands of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) supporters filled the streets of Paris on Saturday to celebrate their club’s Champions League final victory. However, celebrations were marred by clashes with police, resulting in nearly 300 arrests.

While the majority of fans celebrated peacefully, Paris police reported disturbances near the Champs-Élysées and PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where approximately 48,000 fans had gathered to watch the 5-0 triumph against Inter Milan in Munich on large screens.

According to Paris police, most of the nearly 300 arrests were related to possession of fireworks and disorderly conduct.

AFP journalists witnessed police deploying a water cannon to prevent a crowd from reaching the Arc de Triomphe.

“Troublemakers on the Champs-Élysées were seeking to create incidents and repeatedly clashed with the police by throwing large fireworks and other objects," the police stated.

Beyond Paris, in Grenoble, a car drove into celebrating PSG fans, injuring four members of the same family, two seriously. The driver subsequently surrendered to police and was arrested. A source close to the investigation indicated the incident appeared unintentional.

In Paris, the prevailing atmosphere was one of jubilation, with fans singing, dancing, and sounding car horns to celebrate their team’s first European club football title.

Clement, a 20-year-old PSG supporter, remarked: “It’s so good and so deserved! We have a song that talks about our struggles and it hasn’t always been easy. But we got our faith back this year with a team without stars. They’re 11 guys who play for each other."

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office announced he would host the victorious players on Sunday to offer his congratulations. In a separate message on X, Macron praised a “day of glory for PSG," writing, “Bravo, we are all proud. Paris is the capital of Europe tonight."

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo also celebrated the “historic" win.

The PSG team will hold a victory parade along the Champs-Élysées on Sunday, where tens of thousands of supporters are expected to greet their returning heroes.
