Police dismiss child-lifting rumours, warn against mob violence in Bettiah

Bettiah: Bettiah Police have dismissed rumours of child abduction on social media platforms as baseless and misleading. SP Shaurya Suman clarified on Monday that all purported abduction clips verified so far had no link to any child-lifting incident.“Rumours have triggered mob violence against innocent outsiders in some areas despite there being no organised child-lifting gang in Bettiah or West Champaran. Such acts are extremely serious and legally punishable,” he said, urging people to rely on verified information and report suspicious activity to the police. The SP said one recently viral video was traced to an unrelated incident but was falsely circulated as a child-lifting attempt.

The misleading clip has since been taken down. “Police are treating all information related to child abduction with utmost seriousness and are verifying every complaint. Previous cases of missing minors are also being processed,” he added. The district police have appealed to the public to immediately inform authorities about any suspicious activity. “No one should take the law into their own hands or trust unverified social media content,” the SP said, warning that strict action will be taken against rumour-mongers or those indulging in violence based on misinformation.
