Police intensify nakabandis at night to curb rising crime

Margao/Panaji: In response to a recent surge in criminal activities, the Goa police ramped up efforts to maintain law and order by intensifying night nakabandis across both districts.South Goa SP Tikam Singh Verma said this strategic move aims to deter potential offenders during the night hours.Verma told reporters, “Nakabandis are conducted by all police stations across South Goa at strategic locations from 6pm to 10pm.”In order to maintain law and order, ensure public safety, and curb criminal activities across North Goa as well, intensive nakabandi operations and other preventive actions were carried out during the period from Oct 1-13, said North Goa SP Rahul Gupta. These operations were aimed at detecting and deterring illegal activities such as drug trafficking, drunken driving, vehicle theft, and movement of antisocial elements, Gupta said, adding that 132 people have been placed under preventive arrest.Recognising the need for a robust police presence even in the late-night hours, the South Goa police devised a plan to address this challenge. “While it is generally observed that police presence is minimum in the late-night hours, we worked out a plan to address this issue as well,” Verma added. “From 11pm to 5am, nakabandis will be set up at various places, and random checking of vehicles will be done.”Police stations at Colva, Cuncolim, and Mormugao recorded significant action during the drive, police said.
