K. Praveenkumar, Kozhikode District Congress Committee (DCC) president, has claimed that an attempt is being made to divert attention from the attack on Vadakara MP Shafi Parambil at Perambra on October 10. This follows the registration of a case against “an unidentified Congress worker” for reportedly hurling an explosive substance against the police during the incident.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday, he sought to know what was that substance and who brought it to the place. Mr. Praveenkumar claimed that none of the United Democratic Front (UDF) activists had hurled anything against the police on the day. “Was there any explosive substance that was not brought by the police to the scene? The allegation that a Congress worker hurled it was first levelled by a Kozhikode district secretariat member of the CPI(M). It was later picked up by the police and the case was filed,” he claimed.

However, when asked about a video footage in which someone is seen throwing an explosive substance releasing smoke towards the police during the incident, Mr. Praveenkumar said that the police “could create any visual using modern technology”. He also wondered why such a claim was not made on the first or second day after the incident.

“The allegation was levelled after video footage showing police personnel attacking Mr. Parambil came out, and K.E. Baiju, District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) subsequently admitted during a private event that some of his colleagues could have tried to create problems in Perambra. Now, the police are acting according to a script written by the CPI(M),” Mr. Praveenkumar said.
