Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna on Friday (October 24) reaffirmed that political differences would never hinder the timely completion of development projects in the country.
Addressing the media after reviewing the ongoing renovation works at the Kozhikode railway station, the Minister said the Union government had allocated ₹3,046 crore for the railway development in Kerala in the last Union Budget, with a significant increase compared to that of the ₹372 crore allotted during the previous UPA regime.
The Minister pointed out that the Central government had been extending considerable support for the steady growth of rail infrastructure across the State. “Several big and small stations in Kerala are now being upgraded with Central assistance,“ he said, adding that electrification works had already been completed across multiple stretches, enhancing efficiency and quality of service.
Mr. Somanna said that the construction of several Railway overbridges was progressing rapidly, while surveys for new railway lines were also under way. Referring to the ongoing projects in Kozhikode, the Minister said works worth ₹446 crore were under way to transform Kozhikode railway station into a world-class facility equipped with modern amenities for the passengers.
He also noted that the launch of two Vande Bharat Express trains in Kerala marked another milestone in redefining the train journey experience. It also reflected the Centre’s commitment to improving passenger convenience and connectivity, he added.
During his visit, the Minister held discussions with senior Railway officials and reviewed the progress of various ongoing projects. Representatives of the Malabar Chamber of Commerce submitted a memorandum outlining several demands related to the improvement of railway facilities in the Malabar region, which the Minister assured would be duly considered.
