With heavy rain leading to a significant rise in water levels, the shutters of the Poomala Dam, located in Mulangunnathukavu grama panchayat in Thrissur district, are likely to be raised.
District Collector and District Disaster Management Authority chairperson Arjun Pandian has urged those living along the banks of the Malavaya stream to remain on high alert.
The maximum water level of the dam is 29 ft. The first stage warning has been issued as the level has risen to 27 ft. If the water level reaches 28 ft, the shutters will be raised immediately to release the excess water in a controlled manner.
When the excess water is released, water levels in the Malavaya and Puzhakkal streams are likely to rise. As a precaution, people are advised against entering the streams, bathing or washing clothes in them or taking photos near the water.
Curbs on fishing
Strict restrictions will be imposed on fishing in the streams. The Deputy Director of Fisheries has been instructed to take necessary action. The District Fire Officer has been directed to ensure readiness to deal with any emergency situation.
The Executive Engineer of the Thrissur Minor Irrigation Division has been ordered to report the dam’s water level to the District Emergency Operations Centre at hourly intervals, the official directive stated.
