A portion of Poonamallee High Road caved in on Tuesday near Thiruveedhi Amman temple after an old pipeline carrying sewage from the Koyambedu sewage treatment plant sank after developing a leak. Sources in the Highways Department said that over a period of time the line had corroded and carried off soil from under a box culvert running across the arterial road. The road caved in for a length of about four metres and 50 cm deep.
A senior official said that engineers noticed the depression on the road on Tuesday morning and took remedial measures. The site was cordoned off and repairs taken up.
