A proposal for a movie titled Tillotoma, based on the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, is currently being reviewed by public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, which functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The country was rocked by widespread protests when a female postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar room on the RG Kar campus. The investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Sanjay Roy, a police civic volunteer, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

“The proposal for the movie has been received and is under evaluation," Prasar Bharati’s chief executive officer (CEO), Gaurav Dwivedi, told the Hindustan Times. The movie is slated to be directed by Ujjwal Chatterjee, who won the National Award in 1992 for his Bengali film Gondi and also directed Escape From Taliban (2003) starring Manisha Koirala.

Chatterjee said the movie would be told from the perspective of the victim’s mother, with Rajya Sabha MP and actor Rupa Ganguly set to play the lead role.

Victim’s Family Opposes Movie

Meanwhile, the RG Kar rape-murder victim’s family has opposed the movie, accusing the director of making it only for his own benefit. “We have no interest in the film being made because this doesn’t help our case at all. We just want justice. The director is making it for his benefit," the victim’s father told Hindustan Times.

“They keep calling us and disturbing us. We want nothing to do with the film," he added. However, Ujjwal Chatterjee said if the victim’s family does not consent to the movie, it would still be made under a different name.

“If we don’t get permission, we will still make the movie, but under a different name," he said. He also said officials within Prasar Bharati had encouraged him to make the movie, naming chairman Navneet Sehgal specifically. Sehgal has offered no comment so far.

He also said the movie is likely to face opposition in West Bengal and is planning to shoot it in Delhi, with an aim to release it ahead of the upcoming Bengal Assembly elections in 2026. Chatterjee also claimed that the movie is being backed by sections of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, with the active involvement of party MLA Agnimitra Paul. However, the BJP has denied any involvement.

Paul has confirmed her association with the movie and said she is trying to convince the victim’s family to support the project. “I have been with the parents since the beginning, and they have a soft corner for me. We are trying to convince them to support the film, though their lawyer is not keen that it’s made right now. Unless the parents agree, we can’t go ahead," she told HT.

What Happened At RG Kar Hospital?

On August 9 last year, the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee’s body was discovered inside the Chest Medicine Department’s seminar hall on the fourth floor of the hospital’s emergency building. The nature of her injuries, which indicated brutality, and the fact that it happened within a state-run hospital, sent shock waves across West Bengal and beyond.

Amid widespread protests across campuses, the Kolkata Police faced accusations of inaction, leading to the case being transferred to the CBI. Sanjoy Roy was found guilty of rape and murder, and two others – Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal – were also arrested for allegedly misleading the probe.
