The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes held day-long prayers at Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi at Bapu Ghat for the success of 42% reservation for Backward Classes in local body polls, employment and education.
Commission Chairman G. Niranjan, along with members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalagiri Surender, Balalakshmi Rangu, and former MP V. Hanumantha Rao, offered floral tributes to Gandhi’s statue in the Bapu Ghat premises.
Later, they reached Gandhi’s Samadhi and placed the four Bills approved by the State Legislative Assembly at the Samadhi. The prayer programme began with the singing of Vande Mataram.
BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, TPCC president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, BC Finance Corporation Chairman Nuthi Srikanth Goud, and representatives of caste associations, and social activists, joined the programme.
Mr. Niranjan recalled the events that led to the passing of the bills in the Telangana Assembly, right from the Commission being designated as a dedicated commission to determine the reservations as per the Triple Test laid down by the Supreme Court.
He said the Commission conducted this work through a Comprehensive Door-to-Door Household Survey (Caste Survey) instead of relying on the voters’ list. The State Cabinet resolved to conduct a Caste Survey based on the recommendations of the BC Commission. Subsequently, the State Legislative Assembly also passed a resolution approving the same.
