Arsenal held on to the top spot in the Premier League table with their win over Fulham at the Craven Cottage on Saturday as Leandro Trossard provide the telling touch on the day.

The Belgian midfielder’s 58th minute goal proved to be the difference between the London-based sides as Mikel Arteta’s men took their season’s points tally to 19 points from 8 games this season.

Arsenal were dethroned from the top by Manchester City, who had earlier defeated Everton, but Mikel Arteta’s team responded with a determined performance to narrowly overcome their London rivals.

The visitors had a first-half goal by Riccardo Calafiori ruled out for offside and a second-half penalty overturned by VAR, but Fulham made Arsenal work hard for their fifth league clean sheet of the season.

Arsenal now have 19 points from eight games, three more than City, with champions Liverpool, who host Manchester United on Sunday, trailing by four points.

Although Arsenal did not perform at their best and started very slowly, Fulham failed to register a shot on target as Arteta’s side continued to demonstrate their title ambitions.

With West Ham United also failing to have a shot on target in Arsenal’s previous game, it is the first time since their last Premier League title win in 2003-04 that they have achieved this feat in two consecutive league matches.

“We didn’t start the game as we expected," said Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, whose corner led to the winning goal, to Sky Sports. “But we have gained experience after coming here for a few years and not getting the results we wanted. This definitely feels like a significant victory. These are points we weren’t picking up in previous seasons."

Arsenal had drawn and lost their last two league visits to Craven Cottage, so Saturday’s match, right after the international break and following City’s win, was seen as a test.

For the opening 34 minutes, Arsenal did not have a shot on target as they struggled against Marco Silva’s side.

Defender Calafiori managed to score with a superb finish, but it was ruled offside, and Arsenal began to shift gears as halftime approached.

Fulham managed Arsenal’s set-piece threats well but were undone when Saka’s corner was flicked on by Gabriel and Trossard scored his first Premier League goal of the season.

Later, when Saka went down under a challenge from Fulham’s Kevin, referee Anthony Taylor initially awarded a penalty but, after reviewing the pitch-side monitor, correctly ruled that the Fulham player had made contact with the ball and overturned his decision.

This led to eight minutes of stoppage time, during which Arsenal remained solid and comfortably held on.

“Never easy. You need to get everyone aligned and up to speed to come to a difficult place," said Arteta. “We didn’t win here in the last two seasons. They keep knocking on the door, so I’m very happy."
