Liverpool kept their flawless Premier League start alive with a 2-1 win over Everton at Anfield, tightening their grip on the Merseyside derby and opening up a six-point lead at the top of the table.

Goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike were the defending champions’ reward for a dominant first half and enough for a fifth consecutive Premier League win.

Arne Slot’s side, who had relied on late drama in all four league wins and their midweek Champions League triumph over Atletico Madrid, came out firing this time. The defending champions struck twice inside the opening half-hour.

Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring after just nine minutes, guiding Mohamed Salah’s cross into the bottom corner with a clever half-volley.  Soon after, Hugo Ekitike doubled the lead, sliding Gravenberch’s pass through Jordan Pickford’s legs for his third goal in five league games since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt.

With Alexis Mac Allister back alongside Dominik Szoboszlai and Gravenberch in midfield, Liverpool looked far more balanced despite big-money signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak starting on the bench.

Everton fight back

Everton arrived on a four-match unbeaten run, boosted by the form of Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish, and they grew into the game after the break. Grealish’s deep cross set up Idrissa Gana Gueye, who blasted past Alisson Becker just before the hour mark to halve the deficit.

Liverpool, showing signs of fatigue after their midweek exertions, were pushed back late on as Everton pressed for an equaliser. Slot introduced Wirtz and Isak, but they struggled to regain control.

In the end, Liverpool held firm to hand Everton boss David Moyes an unwanted record: 23 visits to Anfield as a manager without a win, the longest such run in Premier League history.

For Liverpool, the perfect start continues—five wins from five, another derby secured, and early momentum in their title defence.
