Preparations underway in Odisha as low-pressure systems may trigger showers

Odisha braces for potential heavy rainfall as two low-pressure systems form over the Bay of Bengal. While no cyclone is confirmed, scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated, particularly in coastal areas. The agriculture department has issued advisories for farmers, urging them to follow IMD guidance and avoid panic amidst expectations of a good crop yield this year.

Bhubaneswar: Following the formation of two well-marked low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal, the govt on Wednesday conducted a preparatory meeting over possible heavy rainfall in the state.

The agriculture department also issued an advisory for farmers if rain and thunderstorm affect crops.The meeting was chaired by principal secretary of agriculture department, Arabinda Kumar Padhee. “According to the IMD, there is no confirmation on the formation of a cyclone so far. However, due to the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, there is a possibility of scattered rainfall at some places in the state. There is a possibility of thunderstorm and lightning in coastal Odisha,” said Padhee while advising farmers to follow the instructions issued by the IMD.The meeting was also attended by agriculture director Shubham Saxena, director of the regional IMD centre here, Manorama Mohanty, and dean of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Prasannajit Mishra.The state received 100% normal rainfall this year, and a good crop yield is expected. The department has advised farmers not to panic over misleading information. “In case of need, farmers can contact 155333 or contact the nearest regional agricultural research centre/agriculture officer,” said an official statement issued by the agriculture department.

The Directorate of Extension Education, OUAT, on Wednesday issued an advisory for farmers to tackle the impending rain and save their crops.Mohanty said the well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal may intensify into a depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay off north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts on Thursday.Under the impact of the low pressure, light to moderate rainfall occurred at a few places over the south Odisha districts and at one or two places over the districts of north Odisha. Khurda recorded the highest rainfall of 63 mm on Wednesday. The IMD has forecast rain till Oct 27.
