Prisoners, Accused In Liquor Scam, Caught Dancing In Ranchi Jail, 2 Officials Suspended

Two officials of the Birsa Munda Central Jail here have been suspended after a video allegedly showing two inmates dancing inside the prison went viral on social media platforms. The officials on Thursday said Assistant Jailer Devnath Ram and Jamadar Vinod Yadav were suspended over dereliction of duty.

The two inmates featured in the video are accused in a liquor scam case. They were seen dancing in a hall of the jail wearing shorts and T-shirts in the viral video.

“Assistant Jailer Devnath Ram and Jamadar Vinod Yadav were suspended over dereliction of duty. It was their duty to keep a check on such reported activity, as per the jail manual," Inspector General of Prisons, Sudarshan Prasad Mandal, told PTI.

Jharkhand BJP chief and Leader of Opposition, Babulal Marandi, shared the video of the incident on X and called for a thorough probe into the incident.

“There are separate rules in the jail for influential prisoners. Because influential inmates locked up in jail get all kinds of facilities through the power of money. Several special wards have been built in the jail for influential prisoners; an entry fee must be paid to stay in these wards. A fixed amount has to be spent each month. Some prominent inmates who have stayed in the jail under Hemant Soren’s protection run a full setup of luxury and indulgence inside the jail with the collusion of jail department officials and staff. For money, all sorts of such tasks are carried out that violate the jail manual," an excerpt from Marandi’s post on X reads.

“An investigation should be conducted under the supervision of a sitting judge of the High Court into such activities inside the jail," Marandi added.
