Japan’s tourism boom has continued unabated since the pandemic, with visitor numbers reaching new highs each year.
To cater to growing demand, the country’s iconic Shinkansen bullet train network is introducing premium travel options, including private cabins for passengers seeking greater comfort and exclusivity, according to a report in CNN.
Shinkansen To Unveil ‘Supreme Class’
From October, travellers journeying between Tokyo and destinations such as Kyoto and Osaka will be able to book the new “Supreme Class." The upgraded cabins feature lockable doors for complete privacy, while larger compartments come equipped with compact sofas. Passengers will also have the ability to control lighting and temperature settings within their cabins.

Rail operators are also preparing to launch a new overnight-style service, “Luna Azul," which translates to “Blue Moon" in Spanish. Scheduled to begin operations next year, the train will run along the Tohoku corridor in northeastern Japan and offer lie-flat seating for travellers heading to prefectures including Aomori and Akita, the report mentioned.
Japan To Raise ‘Sayonara Tax’ For Visitors
At the same time, visitors to Japan will soon face higher travel costs. The country’s departure levy, commonly known as the “sayonara tax," will rise from ¥1,000 (around $6) to ¥3,000 (approximately $18.50) from July 1. The charge is automatically included in airline ticket prices, with the Japanese government saying the additional revenue will be used to improve tourism-related infrastructure.
