Investigation into the potentially fraudulent payments made by France skipper Kylian Mbappe to the accounts of five police officers assigned with the protection of the country’s national football team.
The French finance ministry’s anti-money laundering wing reported unusual financial transactions benefiting the officers.
The public prosecutor’s office said, “Investigations, which are by their very nature complex in the case of financial transactions, are underway in order to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed".
A French investigative weekly reported that the striker’s money was used to pay under the table for private services in the range of around the 180,300 euro mark.
The World Cup-winner’s entourage asserted that everything they did was by the book in a statement they issued and added that Mbappe had always chosen to donate in full his bonuses for playing for France at international level and that the money went to charitable organisations and security personnel in tow.
“It’s what he did after the 2022 World Cup, with complete transparency," the issue read.
The forward made the switch to Spanish side Rea Madrid on a free transfer from Parisian unit PSG last season, but went trophyless with the Los Blancos, while PSG clinched the coveted UEFA Champions League title under the stewardship of Luis Enrique.
