As the family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar Lathar bid him a final farewell on Thursday, his young son, standing near the pyre and surrounded by reporters, held back tears as he said, “I am proud of my father. I will fulfill all his dreams."
Lathar, who was posted in the cyber cell in Rohtak, allegedly died by suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver, and his body was found in a field in Rohtak. His alleged death by suicide has sent shockwaves through the Haryana Police force, not only because of his service record but also due to a note and video that reportedly surfaced after his death.
Link To Another Officer’s Death
In the note said to have been left by Lathar, he made serious allegations against a senior police officer, who himself had died by suicide recently—IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, whose body was discovered with gunshot wounds at his residence in Chandigarh.
Lathar’s death has added a new twist to the ongoing investigation into the IPS officer’s case. Based on the note and video, Lathar’s wife has filed an FIR for abetment to suicide with the Haryana Police, seeking justice for her husband.
Community Pays Tribute
Lathar’s cremation was held in Jind after a post-mortem examination. Hundreds of villagers, police personnel, and political leaders attended to pay their respects. Young men on motorcycles carrying the national flag rode alongside the police vehicle transporting his body, creating an emotional farewell procession.
His daughter, speaking to reporters in Julana, called her father a man of integrity. “My father gave his life in the fight against corruption; he is a martyr. I have faith that Haryana Police and the government will support us," she said.
Government Promises Support
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini met the bereaved family on Wednesday, followed by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday, who announced government support for the family. “Lathar’s wife will be given a job, and the government will take care of the education of his children," Khattar said.
Haryana Police Chief OP Singh, reacting to the twin tragedies, said the force is deeply affected. “Two lives were lost. Both were our colleagues. We are considering what needs to be done so that such a situation does not arise in the future," he told reporters in Karnal. Singh added that the Officers’ Wives Association Institute will be strengthened to provide better emotional and mental health support to police families.
