Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi scored on either side of half-time, leading Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders on Monday and securing their spot in the last 16 of the Club World Cup.

PSG needed a strong performance after their 1-0 loss to Botafogo in their previous Group B match, and they proved too strong for the MLS side despite not playing to their full potential.

In front of 50,628 fans at Lumen Field, Kvaratskhelia deflected a wayward Vitinha shot into the net to open the scoring at 35 minutes. Hakimi sealed the win just before the midway point of the second half, ending any hopes of a comeback by the hosts.

With this victory, PSG advances as group winners on goal difference, moving up from second place due to Botafogo’s late defeat to Atletico Madrid at the same time in Pasadena.

The French champions will now face the Group A runners-up in Atlanta on Sunday, leaving the west coast for the first time since arriving in the United States.

“It wasn’t easy because the pitch was very different from what we are used to in Europe, so we couldn’t play with the fluidity that we like, but we adapted," said PSG coach Luis Enrique.

“It was a great match, difficult for us, tough from the beginning because Seattle played with intensity and quality on and off the ball," said the Spaniard.

The Paris coach made four changes to his line-up after the defeat to Botafogo, with captain Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Fabian Ruiz, and Joao Neves all coming in.

However, Ousmane Dembele, their top scorer during the European season with 33 goals in all competitions, missed a third game in a row after travelling to the tournament with an injury.

The Sounders needed a big win and a defeat for Atletico to progress to the last 16, a challenging task for the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League winners.

They lacked the quality to significantly trouble PSG, although Desire Doue threatened early with a powerful shot that home goalkeeper Stefan Frei tipped over.

A mistake by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma presented a chance to the home side, but it was difficult for Jesus Ferreira, who fired off-target.

The UEFA Champions League winners scored the opening goal 10 minutes before the interval when Vitinha’s shot from the edge of the area took a fortunate deflection off Kvaratskhelia and found the net.

The second goal came at 66 minutes after Doue delivered a delightful pass to Bradley Barcola on the wing. The substitute cut in from the left before setting up Hakimi, who controlled and slotted in his 10th goal of the season.
