Chelsea won the Club World Cup but won't join the 2029 edition. PSG, despite losing, secured a spot due to new rules.

Chelsea were the 2025 Club World Cup winners (X)
Chelsea may have won the Club World Cup this past weekend, but that does not guarantee any free seats for the next edition in 2029.
As of now, the Maresca-led Blues will not be taking part in the next edition of the Club World Cup, despite emphatically winning the tournament’s newly restructured format.
In a surprising twist, Paris Saint-Germain—the team Chelsea convincingly defeated in the final—have already secured their spot in the 2029 championship.
But, why and how is that the case?
The reason lies in the tournament’s new qualification system.
Under the updated format, 32 teams will compete, with spots distributed by continent according to FIFA’s allocations.
UEFA, Europe’s governing body, will receive 12 places, while the rest will be divided as follows: CONMEBOL (South America) gets six, AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), and CONCACAF (North and Central America) receive four each, OFC (Oceania) gets one, and the host nation is granted a single automatic slot.
However, winning the tournament itself does not guarantee a place in the next edition. Chelsea must qualify through UEFA’s criteria, either by winning the Champions League or through their UEFA coefficient ranking.
PSG, despite their heavy defeat in the final, have already punched their ticket to the 2029 Club World Cup. They qualify as one of four Champions League winners in the tournament cycle leading up to the next competition.
Once those automatic Champions League winners are selected, the remaining UEFA slots will be determined by club rankings. Unfortunately for Chelsea, they currently sit 14th in the UEFA coefficient standings—just outside the projected qualification zone.
If they are to secure a spot, they’ll need to either improve their ranking significantly or win the Champions League before 2029.
